Wanamassa School

The Wanamassa School, which opened in 1930, was built at a cost of $160,000. Before that, students from the Wanamassa section walked to the Bradley School in Asbury Park. In September 1928, a group of parents demanded that the Board of Education provide a school in the southern section of the township because the facilities were badly overcrowded in Asbury Park. By January 1929, plans had been drawn; a vote was taken in September 1929. Out of 397 votes cast, only 88 opposed the proposed school. Wanamassa School opened in September 1930 with eight classes in grades one through eight. Until 1937, when the school became overcrowded, tuition students from Allenhurst, Deal, and Interlaken also attended the school. In 1950, two wings with eight new classrooms were added. Mrs. Victoria Green was the teaching principal from 1930 to 1949.
